Why Your Blues Print Purple: Colour on Printed Stickers

You approve a proof, the stickers arrive, and the blue has gone slightly purple. Or the vivid green has dulled. Or the orange has lost its punch. This is the single most common surprise in printing, it is not a mistake, and once you understand why it happens you can design around it.
Screens and printers make colour in opposite ways
Your monitor makes colour by emitting light. It starts black and adds red, green and blue light to build every colour you see. That is RGB.
A printer makes colour by absorbing light. It starts with white paper or vinyl and lays down cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink, each one subtracting part of the light bouncing back to your eye. That is CMYK.
These are fundamentally different processes, and they cannot reach the same set of colours. A backlit screen can produce colours that no combination of ink on a surface can physically reproduce.
When your artwork contains one of those colours, the printer does the only thing it can: it prints the closest colour it can actually make. That shift is what you are seeing.
Which colours shift the most
Bright blues. The worst offender by a distance. Vivid electric blue is easy on a screen and genuinely hard in CMYK. It reliably comes out with a purple lean. If your brand blue is a bright one, this is the thing to test.
Vivid greens. Bright, saturated greens print duller and slightly more yellow than they look on screen.
Fluorescent and neon anything. These cannot be reproduced in standard CMYK at all. Not approximated, not close, genuinely outside what four inks can do. They print as an ordinary version of the same hue.
Rich oranges. Usually acceptable, but they lose some intensity.
Colours that behave predictably: blacks, greys, most reds, browns, muted and earthy tones, pastels. If your design lives in that range, you will probably never notice a shift.
What to do about it
Work in CMYK from the start
Set your document to CMYK before you begin designing, not after you have finished. You will then be choosing from colours that can actually be printed, and nothing surprises you at the end.
Converting an RGB file to CMYK at the last minute is the worst version of this. You have already fallen in love with colours the printer cannot make, and the conversion happens without you seeing it.
In Illustrator: File > Document Colour Mode > CMYK Colour. In Photoshop: Image > Mode > CMYK Colour.
Check the numbers, not the screen
An uncalibrated monitor is not a reliable reference. Two screens side by side will show the same file differently.
The CMYK values are the reliable part. If your brand blue is specified as a CMYK breakdown, use those numbers rather than eyedropping something that looks right.
Know your brand colours in every space
If your brand only has a hex code, you have a problem waiting to happen. Any brand that gets printed needs its colours defined in CMYK as well, and ideally as a Pantone reference too.
Doing this once means your stickers, your business cards and your signage all match, instead of each being a slightly different interpretation of the same hex value.
Order a small run first
If exact colour matters, print a small quantity before committing to a large one. It costs a little and it removes all the guesswork. For a brand colour you will be printing for years, it is worth doing once properly.
What the proof does and does not tell you
Every order includes a free digital proof, and it is genuinely useful. It shows you the layout, the size, where the cut falls, and catches anything obviously wrong before production.
What it cannot do is show you exact printed colour, because you are looking at it on a screen. A digital proof is a check on everything except colour accuracy.

The realistic expectation
For most work, printed colour lands very close to what you designed and nobody would pick a difference without the two side by side.
The exceptions are consistent and predictable: bright blues, vivid greens and anything fluorescent. If your design leans on those, expect some shift, or design in a way that does not depend on hitting them exactly.
The people who are happiest with printed colour are the ones who knew what to expect. That is the whole point of this guide.
