Clear vs White Vinyl Stickers: Which Should You Choose?

Clear stickers look great in product photos. They also catch out more first-time buyers than any other option we print. The difference between clear and white vinyl is not just the look of the material, it changes how your artwork prints and what your design needs to be able to handle.
The thing nobody explains: white ink
Start here, because everything else follows from it.
Printers do not print white. There is no white ink in a standard four colour process. On white vinyl this never comes up, because anywhere your design has no ink, the white material shows through and does the job.
On clear vinyl, no ink means transparent. Whatever the sticker is stuck to shows through.
This is either the entire point of a clear sticker, or a nasty surprise, depending on whether you knew about it.
Clear stickers can be printed with a white ink layer underneath the colours, which gives you opaque areas on a transparent background. That is how you get a clear sticker with solid colour that reads properly on a dark surface. But it is a deliberate choice that has to be built into the file, not something that happens automatically.
What each one is good for
White vinyl
The default, and the right answer for most jobs.
Colours print at full strength and look the same regardless of what is behind the sticker. A design on white vinyl applied to a black surface looks identical to the same sticker on a white one. That predictability is worth a lot.
Choose white when: colour accuracy matters, the sticker is going on unknown or varied surfaces, the design has photographic content, or you simply want it to look right without thinking about it.
Clear vinyl
The right answer when you want the surface underneath to be part of the design.
On glass, on a coloured bottle, on packaging where you want the product visible, a clear sticker looks like printing directly onto the object rather than sticking something to it. Done well it is a noticeably more premium result.
Choose clear when: it is going on glass or a window, you want a "printed on" look, the surface behind it is part of the appeal, or the design is bold enough to work without a solid background.
Designing for clear
Some designs work on clear vinyl and some do not. The difference is fairly predictable.
Works well: bold shapes, heavy line work, solid dark colours, simple logos, high contrast type.
Struggles: pale colours, soft gradients, drop shadows, anything relying on white as a design element, photographic images, fine detail in light tones.
The test is simple. Look at your design and ask which parts are white. On a clear sticker without white ink, those parts will vanish. If your logo has white text inside a coloured shape, that text becomes a window to whatever is underneath. Sometimes that looks superb. Sometimes it destroys the design.
The other consideration is what it is going on. A dark design on clear vinyl applied to a dark surface will barely read. A light design on a light surface, the same. Clear stickers need contrast between your artwork and the surface, and you do not always control that surface.
Cost and turnaround
Clear vinyl costs more than white. The material is more expensive and jobs requiring a white ink layer take more work to set up and print.

Durability is the same
Both are premium vinyl with a laminate over the top. Both are waterproof, scratch resistant and UV resistant. Neither has a durability advantage over the other.

How to decide
Ask yourself one question: do I want to see the surface behind the sticker?
If yes, and the design is bold enough to carry it, go clear. If no, or if you are unsure, go white. White is the safe answer and there is no shame in it. Most of the best stickers we print are on white vinyl.
If you are genuinely torn, order a small run of each. Seeing them on the actual surface settles it in a way that no amount of reading will.
